About This Course

The rock pigeon (Columba livia) was the world’s first engineered communication network. From Sumerian courts to WWI trenches — where Cher Ami saved 194 soldiers of the Lost Battalion by flying 40 km with a bullet in his chest — carrier pigeons carried messages at 80 km/h across battle lines. Darwin wrote The Variation of Animals and Plants Under Domestication (1868) largely on pigeon breeds, and modern experiments on animal navigation trace back to Gustav Kramer’s 1950 sun-compass and Floriano Papi’s 1972 olfactory-map revolutions.
